How to Choose a Torque Wrench: Drive Size, Range and Accuracy
A torque wrench is the only hand tool that turns judgment into a number. Buy the wrong one and every “spec-torque” fastener you tighten is a guess with a fancy handle. Here is how to match the tool to the work.
Start with the working range, not the max number
Every torque wrench has a sweet spot between roughly 20% and 100% of its rated range. Accuracy claims — typically ±4% for a decent click-type — are validated inside that window. Below it, readings drift; at the very top, you are loading the mechanism hard on every click.
Rule of thumb: pick a wrench whose middle third covers your most common fasteners. If your typical job is 80 N·m, a 20–100 N·m wrench beats a 40–200 N·m wrench even though both technically reach the number.
Drive size follows torque, not habit

Buying a 1/2” wrench for electronics work “just in case” guarantees you will work outside its accurate range. Own two modest wrenches before you own one giant one.
Click, beam, dial or electronic?
Click-type wrenches dominate workshops because they let you work by feel and signal when to stop. Beam wrenches are nearly indestructible and drift-free but require you to watch the scale while pulling — awkward in tight spaces. Dial wrenches give a readable needle for test and inspection work. Electronic wrenches add memory, angle-measurement and data export, at three to five times the price.
For a general shop, a quality click-type covers 90% of needs. Buy electronic when your process demands documented proof, not just correct torque.
Calibration is part of the purchase
Budget for calibration the way you budget for sockets. A wrench that has never been calibrated is a decoration after its first year of daily use. Store it at the lowest setting, never use it to loosen fasteners, and retire it from critical work after any drop.
The cheapest torque wrench is the one whose readings you can still trust three years in — buy the mechanism, not the price tag.
